From our yard you can see the outline of Hisarya — a medieval fortress that witnessed battles and empires. Walk its walls and touch the stones that hold stories from the time of Tsar Kaloyan.

In a single day you can visit the Devetashka cave — a magnificent underground world — and Stratesh park, a kingdom of ancient trees and family laughter.

Built by master craftsman Kolyo Ficheto, it has become the symbol of Lovech. The bridge is the only one of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula and links the old town with the new. Inside it are small makers’ shops and a patisserie where you can try white preserve and coffee brewed on sand.

The old quarter of Varosha, on the eastern bank of the Osam, has kept the atmosphere of the Bulgarian Revival with its architecture fully preserved. A walk through Varosha is a journey into the past.

The nature park lies on the hill of the same name and opens a wide panorama over Lovech. It covers 100 hectares. A good part of the town’s landmarks are inside Stratesh, and it is the place locals recommend for a walk.

The alley runs along the western bank of the Osam and for two kilometres reveals a picturesque landscape of river, rock and greenery. It passes a fountain of fresh spring water that brings welcome coolness on summer days.

The largest and most imposing monument to Vasil Levski stands in Stratesh park. It carries the message: “Vasil Levski (1837–1873). If I win, I win for a whole nation; if I lose, I lose only myself.” The museum’s collection covers the Bulgarian struggle for national liberation, the work of the Apostle of Freedom and the activity of the Lovech private revolutionary committee.

Also known as the Lovech fortress, it stands on the hill south of the town, with the Vasil Levski monument at its entrance. Remains of a Thracian settlement have been uncovered here, and the fortress itself dates back to the Roman Empire. The Peace Treaty of Lovech, which began the Second Bulgarian Empire, was signed here.

In the eastern part of Stratesh park is the Lovech zoo, the second largest in Bulgaria, with a wide range of animals from every continent. A favourite outing with small children.

A waymarked walking trail with plenty of resting spots follows the route of the ancient Roman road. An easy and pleasant walk for anyone.

The Kakrina Inn is a cultural monument of national importance. Before the Liberation it served the Internal Revolutionary Organisation as a refuge for prominent revolutionaries. On 27 December 1872 Vasil Levski was captured here. Today every visitor can walk in the footsteps of the Apostle of Freedom and see the small inn where he spent the night.

The whole Devetaki plateau is full of striking natural features — karst formations and numerous caves. Only 20 km from Lovech lies one of the largest caves in Bulgaria, over 20,000 m² in area and 60 metres high, home to colonies of bats. In 2011 The Expendables 2 was filmed here.

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God was founded in the 16th century and is the largest monastery in the Balkan Mountains. The complex stands on the bank of the Cherni Osam river, 10 km from the town of Troyan. The Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim is buried here.

The museum, in the village of Cherni Osam, holds an exceptionally wide range of mounted animal species — mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects — as well as specimens of extinct species.
